The HS Varsity girls 2018 thread

Starting early on a slow day. Who is looking good this year? Cardinal Gibbons has a strong freshman class but will be pretty weak otherwise. They have lost a number of starters. Basically the 03 pool will go into triangle schools this year as freshmen and that pool is ridiculously deep.

What about the traditional powerhouses Green Hope and Panther Creek? How will these teams look? How many starters have they lost?

Quick question about scheduling. Is the first play date for NCHSAA schools Feb 26th or the 28th?

This will be an interesting year, as the academy has now pulled girls players from their high school teams. I think this will be a transition for all involved. Especially since, in girls soccer 1 player can carry a team, those top players will now not be playing. I think this will hurt parity rather than promote it.

In the larger areas like Charlotte or Raleigh, might not make a difference when schools play one another. Possible the playoffs could look different with winners coming from teams in smaller towns where no DA. Would like to see teams other than Charlotte or Raleigh in the Championship game for 4A.

West Johnston was a good example of that. Robin Pollard carried that team for 3-4 years. Teams good enough to shut her down easily beat them. It'll be interesting to see what happens to that team this year without her.

Don't see that happening. Perhaps the Wilmington team but there is enough depth within the ranks of Raleigh and Charlotte teams that winning 4A will be next to impossible for most smaller schools.

Really the state title will be shared by 4-6 schools for years to come -- Hough, Meyers Park, CG, GH, PC, and maybe Apex. Wakefield and a few others might be good too but HS varsity soccer is pretty much a follow the money sport. Schools with the most rich white/Asian kids will win the soccer title. That's a given.

Wilmington could make a run this year. Looks like CG lost in the championship last year to a non-Charlotte team.

Last year's champion has apparently been dismissed and forgotten.

Which Wilmington School? NH is 3A , Ashley, Hoggard, Laney, will all be mediocre and not enough depth or any game changing players, like most Raleigh Schools have. It would take the best players from all the wilmington schools to be at one school to beat or compete with Raleigh Schools. Even with DA Raleigh Schools have the most depth and talent.

It was one of those WTF moments. $hit happens.

Panther Creek is very deep this year based on some reports I have heard from the coaches. GH will be GH and Gibbons will be retooling.

Games began last week.

How did things go? Heard Apex does not have enough girls for JV. Same for Knightdale.

I follow Cary Imps. Looks like they won by a lot against Knightdale (expected) and drew Middle Creek (I had expected them to lose). Caught second half of the game against Middle Creek. Some fantastic athletes on the Cary team...not many soccer players but a couple of very interesting freshmen (freshwomen??). Middle Creek looked superior soccer talent wise but could not get a W. Middle Creek's GK is quite good.

Gibbons I think starts this week. No idea how Panthe Creek and Green Hope did.

Maybe I was wrong, maxpreps rankings are out Laney and Ashley are number 1 and 2 in the state ... Just feel like there are so many good teams in other areas that are beating each other so they have a worse records. Can anyone enlighten me on Laney and Ashley

Ashley has a lot of talent. Played them down at the Battle @ the Beach. Have one girl up top that is very dangerous.

Heard from a friend that Cary versus Green Hope was some game last night, 4-5 to GH. Seems like academy has sucked some players out of GH but the lady Imps showed a lot of heart.

A quick thought after watching a local HS game, boy some of those high $$ ECNL players and NCFC elite players sure do look ordinary against well organized and well coached teams fielding >50% challenge and rec players.

Mid-season report for triangle area schools. GH is finding its feet in Tri6. No real surprises.

FVAA is the real surprise package in South Wake. Apex looks pretty weak this year.

Cap7 has a dominant team is Leesville Rd. Cardinal Gibbons is struggling with a lot of new players.

It will take this year for the schools in raleigh to adjust to losing the talent of the Academy players. Looks to be that the field is level all around and will make for interesting playoffs, possibly a raleigh school not representing the east in the final would be something. And from the rankings looks like the best team or team to beat is Ashley (#1 in 4A and Leesville are both undefeated)
