Howell leaves CASL

Dear CASL Members,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce that CASL (Capital Area Soccer League) Director of Coaching for over eleven years, Jay Howell, is stepping down from his position with CASL to become the Executive Director of Birmingham United Soccer Association in Alabama. During Jay’s tenure at CASL, the club has grown into the top full service club in America. In Jay’s years at CASL, the league has improved its strong recreational base with about 6,000 participants annually. The CASL Challenge League (North Carolina’s middle level) is the strongest in the state with over 130 teams playing in each of two seasons annually. The Classic Division has many competitive levels with the top level being competitive nationally. The CASL visitraleigh.com National Soccer Series presented by Chelsea Football Club is one of the top tournaments in the nation with over 1100 teams from approximately 45 state soccer associations participating annually. Jay Howell has been a leader in all aspects of this growth of CASL.

Jay has been this driving force due to his vision of what this club should be and adhering to the principles that he has laid out. He has had to make some hard decisions that weren’t always popular, but, he always had the betterment of CASL as his guide. Jay’s forthcoming honesty and his ability to lead will be missed. Birmingham United will be getting a fine leader that will catapult their club into the national spotlight. I can speak for all of CASL in saying that Jay will be missed and that we wish him the greatest success in his new locale. On a personal note, I will miss our lively discussions about youth soccer and various other topics. Jay and I have forged a great working relationship and I will miss interacting with him on a daily basis.

Jay will move on to Birmingham United in May. CASL will be naming his replacement as Director of Coaching, hopefully, this week. Jay will be the primary guest on this Saturday’s edition (9-10 am EDT) of the Back of the Net Show on 99.9 the Fan and streamed live through WRALsportsfan.com which I host.

Still, with a second look, CASL is the top full service club in America? Who is doing those rankings? Gotta love it when someone throws down the gauntlet

please don't take this as CASL bashing...even though it is a bit I guess. My youngest has some great friends playing for them.. and lord knows they are successful on the field

but my biggest gripe with CASL(from the wayyyyy outside looking in) is that they seem to be the ultimate "We know what's best for your wonderfuly athletic child...give us your $$$ and trust us"

and you can't play any sport outside of CASL...

if that's all you want to do ...great...but if not....?????

Birmingham,Alabama is a better job than CASL?

Looks like CASL needs to post a couple of job openings ;-D

Well, name another club from top to bottom that does it better? From mini-kicker type programs to youth development programs to REC level soccer to US Academy. They can back that statement up pretty well honestly.

But this thread is about the coaching absence.

Best of luck to Coach Howell at BUSA.

The grass always looks greener somewhere else. Especially when the home turf it's being compared to is CASL's WRAL :=)

More seriously, Jay Howell is a class guy who always treated me with friendly respect, both as a soccer-parent when my daughter played classic at CASL, and when I refereed games he was coaching. We'll miss him.

Because I am not the person that said it, I am asking what critieria is used for the hyperbole. 'The top full service Club'. I ain't no expert, but there are a couple of states with more successful programs that what NC offers, aren't there? I only asked who was providing the rankings for that full service comment. You say it; you prove it

Jay has accomplished a tremendous amount at CASL in the past 11 years. It will be a big loss for the club. He is always looking for the next big challenge. For the past decade he found those challenges at CASL. Now he will jump into Alabama and Region III Central. Definately quaifies as a challenge.

Best of luck to Jay. Keep riding the dragon.

All im saying is no matter what the criteria is I am pretty sure CASL meets it...

And Jay Howell is a huge part of that.

You are correct. Of course, an ED from a program in Texas, Virginia, Florida, or California, etc, can make the same statement and go unchallenged.
My point is that he didn't say 'one of the best', he said 'the best'--hence my question about the data

Yes, admittedly Charlie Slagel's statement included a bit of self-serving advertising. When clubs are compared (as they invariably are), the metric of quality nearly always focuses on the success of their top tier teams. But when looked at in the macro, do these other top clubs provide complete soccer opportunities themselves (not just loose "partnerships" with local Y's, etc.) for all levels of play and all ages? If so, then more power to them and I encourage them to continue to expand those opportunities (and toot their own horn about it). In fact, I think until a few years ago, CASL also offered a fully supported adult league (but had to spin that off as an independent organization due to rules governing non-profits, or something like that).

I think we can concede that hyperbole is part of the job requirement. Charlie does his job well.

Yep, hyperbole is good for business. The last governor of NY had a campaign slogan that inferred he would "Bring the passion back to Albany."

Wait... then again... that was not hyperbole at all. He did exactly what he claimed he would, and was everything he said he was, and more...

Seriously though, anyone who doesn't see that Jay was a great soccer person is on opposite poles with me.
