3-2 at the end of the second period. USA leading.
What an intense game! Good thing both teams have a day off tomorrow.

Would be a big upset if USA can pull it out. Kids against the NHL stars . . . . .

Found a breakdown of the number of NHL players on each team. Not sure of its accuracy but it sounds about right.
23 - Canada
23 - America
19 - Sweden (3 others with NHL experience)
18 - Finland (the other 5 all have NHL experience)
16 - Czech Republic (3 others with NHL experience (and 3 Stanley Cup rings))
14 - Russia (5 others with NHL experience)
13 - Slovakia (the other 10 have NHL experience)
6 - Germany (2 others with NHL experience)
3 - Switzerland (and 3 others with NHL experience)
3 - Belarus
2 - Latvia (1 other with NHL experience)
0 - Norway (1 with NHL experience)
276 players in the tournament
140 current NHL players
33 with NHL experience

What a great game. Hard hitting non-stop action. I thought the boys were going to kill the second power play in the third period. No matter now.
Go USA!

Yeah - the Americans are all NHL players and very good ones at that. The USA decided to go young, so the old familiar names (like Mike Modano, etc)
aren't there. So unless you are an NHL fan, you might not recognize the names, but make no mistake, there are bonafide stars wearing USA on their
chests.
Having said that - the Canadians were overwhelming favorites but that's why they play the games. Brodeur was not very good and Miller was
fantastic.
Brian Burke (who put the USA team together, he's the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs by day) said he built the team with a specific purpose and with
players that would play a certain role and with certain character traits. That's how the Hurricanes Tim Gleason ended up on the squad.
So far so good, but there are some really good teams to play.

Gleason also ended up on the team due to another player leaving with injuries/upcoming surgery. Glad he can be there though!

Yup, but some feel there were others that still could have been chosen in front of Gleason anyway. But Tim is a Burke-kinda player.

this team kinda reminds me of the 1980 team. just a bunch of hungry no-names.

I think non hockey fans think of them as no names, but they are just mostly young players in the league, Zac Parise and Patrick Kane are phenomenal
young players, but are millionaires just like the rest of the squad. I believe there are only 3 former Olympians on the squad which makes them
relatively unknown outside of hockey fans.
Making any comparison to 1980 is quaint, but couldn't be farther from the truth.
But it's great for the sport to see the US win that game.
BTW, in recent other events, the US won both the U17 and U20 (aka World Jrs which was held in Canada the week after xmas)
World Championships.

The USA team is far from being "no-names" and last night proved it.
I find the EAST/WEST NHL breakdown between the two teams pretty interesting.
